New Horizon Orphanage is located in Lusaka, the capital of the south
African republic of Zambia. Previously under British colonial rule,
Zambia gained it's independence in 1964 with Kenneth Kaunda as it's
first president.
Much of Zambia is covered by a high plateau lying at around 4,000
ft above sea level, consisting of savana grassland and forest, and supports
crop farming, and livestock farming in the north. From around the 18th
century, copper has become the main commodity in Zambia, with cities
such as Lusaka and Kitwe growing to become major mining centers. Hydro
electric power from artificial Lake Kariba supplies both Zambia and
Zimbabwe.
Zambia's population in 2002 stands at over 9 million. It's official
language is English; Christianity is the dominant religion; the main
ethnic groups are Bemba, Nyanja and Tonga.
